Emirates Waste to Energy Company
BEEAH, in an early partnership with Masdar – Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, co-founded the Emirates Waste to Energy (EWTE) Company with the goal of addressing two critical environmental challenges: managing hard-to-recycle waste and developing more low-emissions power solutions.
Now jointly operated by BEEAH and Tadweer Group, the UAE’s first dedicated waste-to-energy company is on a mission to pioneer renewable energy projects across the region.
Sharjah Waste to Energy Facility
The Sharjah Waste to Energy facility, EWTE’s flagship project, commenced operations in 2022 as the UAE’s first commercial-scale waste-to-energy plant.
Building on its year-on-year success, the plant is now doubling its existing capabilities in an ambitious Phase Two plan. The expanded facility will scale up operations to process more waste and generate more clean energy each year.
- Increased Processing Capacity: From 300,000 tons to up to 600,000 tons of hard-to-recycle waste.
- More Clean Energy Output: From 30 MW to nearly 60 MW of low-carbon electricity for the public electrical grid, in collaboration with Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) – enough to power up to 60,000 homes.
- Higher Emissions Displaced: From 450,000 tons to up to 1 million tons of CO2 emissions.
Located adjacent to BEEAH’s Waste Management Complex, the Sharjah Waste to Energy facility has been instrumental in supplementing robust recycling efforts, helping drive Sharjah’s landfill diversion rate to 93%.
